Shrewsbury, the county town of Shropshire, is a medieval market town nestled within the beautiful Shropshire countryside and bordering Wales.
The town is known for its historic buildings, including its notable Tudor and Georgian architecture, of which more than 660 buildings are listed. The town has a red sandstone castle, originally for defence, and is now the home of the ShropshireRegimentalMuseum. Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine Monastery dating back to 1083, can also be found in the town.
The River Severn, which loops around the town, runs alongside The Quarry - a 29-acre park in the town centre and is an important recreational hub for Shrewsbury. It hosts the annual Shrewsbury Flower Show, which has now been running for more than 125 years and receives more than 100,000 visitors each year. The evolutionary Biologist, Charles Darwin, was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and educated at ShrewsburySchool. The town holds an annual Darwin Festival and will be celebrating Darwin’s bi-centenary in 2009.
The constituency of Shrewsbury and Atcham covers an area of 232-square miles, and has a population of around 96,000. Popular events throughout the year include, the Shrewsbury Summer Season, the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, the world famous Shrewsbury Flower Show, the West Midlands Show and the International Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival.
